Stanwell Road Surgery
Newsletter - Jan 2010
We hope that you will find the contents of our newsletter, interesting, useful and informative. We welcome your feedback as we strive to continually improve our services.
Christmas gifts
Thankyou for your generosity over the Christmas period. We continue to enjoy the chocolates and biscuits well into the new year. they were all very much appreciated.
Weather
At the beginning of January, snowy weather conditions and two car accidents at the bottom of Stanwell Road caused a burst water main and damage to the GPO box. This rendered us without a phone line for 2 days. We were then given only one line into the surgery and one line out for nearly two weeks. This as you can imagine caused much stress and frustration for staff and patients. Thank you for your patience at this difficult time.
"Winter vomiting " caused by Norovirus
The most common time for this condition is during the months of December through to February.
Symptons include: Sudden onset of vomiting with or without watery diarrhoea and crampy tummy pains.
Advice: The illness last usually about 2 days and settles by itself. Avoid dehydration by taking plenty of fluids by mouth, if you are elderly or frail you may wish to consult your doctor or out of hour's service. Minimise contact with others until you are sympton free for 48 hours. Use gloves when disinfecting, clean surfaces with ready made bleach containing disinfectants and wash hands regularly. Using a washing machine or dishwasher (on a hot programme) provides the safest and most efficient way of cleaning crockery, bedding etc rather than washing by hand.
Swine Flu
Is a respiratory illness caused by a new strain of influenza virus. The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect against swine flu, so a new flu vaccine has been manufactured. Swine flu for most people can be a mild illness but for others it can cause serious illness, especially those with long term conditions such as asthma, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes and heart disease. It is therefore important to have a vaccine to prevent people from catching and spreading swine flu.
Swine Flu clinics
Have been set up at various times of the day to suit everyone, please enquire at reception for an appointment. If you have a child aged 6 months to 5 years and you would like to have your child vaccinated please make an apppointment. All adults from six months to 65 years with long term illness and pregnant women should also make appointments. We are following the goverments recommendations as to which group to vaccinate next so keep as eye on the national news and announcements on the television and radio.
Patient Participation Group
Our small group of volunteers are at the present time looking into the parking situation outside the surgery. Within the last year there have been double yellow lines installed in front of the surgery making parking for patients very difficult. We are hoping that the council will allow 1/2 hour parking permits for patients to use. Watch this space!
The patient participation group will also assist us with the patient survey at the beginning of 2010. We would welcome any suggestions as to the content of the survey and any specific questions patients would like to see added. Please use the suggestions box in the surgery for any feedback or communication to positively improve our services.
Appointments
Appointments can be booked up to 8 weeks in advance for both GPs and Nurses. We now have two new mid morning appointment slots, during each doctor's surgery every day which will be designated to the older person if required.
Please may we respectfully remind you that if you fail to attend a pre arranged appointment this then prevents another patient from attending for a consultation. During the last year, 2009, there have been a total of 1,470 appointments that patients have failed to attend.
PLEASE CANCEL YOUR APPOINTMENT IN ADVANCE
IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND.
Opening times
We are now open from 07.30 every morning for prebookable appointments (doors open for all other enquires and appointments at 08.15 hrs) the late evenng appointments have been put on hold so that we can cope with the extra work caused by the Swine flu clinics. We will let you know when these late appointments resume. Please check this website and/or the notice boards in the surgery.
Easter opening hours
The surgery will close on Thursday 1st April at 6.30pm and will re-open on Tuesday 6th April at 7.30am.
Prescriptions
For the requisition of repeat prescriptions we ask that you give us 48 hours to process your requests. You may now request your repeat prescription online at www.stanwellroadsurgery.co.uk and collect 48 hours later.
There is a pharmacy collection service for most local pharmicies, please enquire at reception to see if your pharmacy participates in this service.
Repeat dispensing scheme.
This is a service operated by you local pharmacy whereby, we authorise a series of prescriptions which will last from 6 months up to 1 year in some circumstances. The patient then goes straight to the pharmacy when a new batch of medication is required. This is only manageable for certain medications. Please ask your Nurse or GP if this service is suitable for you and ask at reception for a leaflet.
